Floss gets nod over Dolly

A STRONG turnout of competitors from across the state created solid competition at this year’s Royal Hobart Show sheep competition.

Held last weekend at Campbell Town, the sheep competition saw a good line up of breeds with studs from across the state making the trip.

Paul and Shannon Day continued what has been a highly successful show season so far taking out the Supreme Champion Exhibit with a White Suffolk ewe from their Sunnybanks Stud.

The winning ewe called Floss, was bred at the couple’s stud at Penguin.

She also won the Champion White Suffolk Ewe award before going on to be sashed Grand Champion White Suffolk and then Champion Interbreed Ewe.

Mr Day said the ewe was by the same sire at Dolly, another White Suffolk Ewe which recently won the Supreme Champion award at the Royal Launceston Show.

“It’s a different judge, so they have a different opinion,” Mr Day said.

“Floss is probably a thicker ewe with a bit more meat on her, but Dolly is a longer ewe.

“It just comes down to personal preference and what the judge wanted on the day.”

Both Floss and Dolly were part of the stud’s winning Interbreed Group of Three team as well.

The stud also won the Supreme Champion Poll Dorset award with one of their ewes.

The Champion Interbreed Ram award was won by a ram from Julian Iles’s Killara Stud.

The ram also won the Champion Poll Dorset Ram title.

The next competition on the calendar for the Sunnybanks Stud will be the Deloraine Show on November 25.

Mr Day said Deloraine was now one of the state’s biggest sheep shows so competition will be strong.
