King Island Council scales back CCTV plans
The King Island Community has spoken. They are not happy with the proposed installation of CCTV in Currie and the council has bowed to their wishes.
"Based on the excellent constituent feedback received and additional time taken to consider King Island specific requirements, the council meeting on Tuesday made the decision to adopt a more limited rollout footprint of new CCTV systems than originally proposed," Mayor Marcus Blackie said.
The revised plan will see CCTV systems installed only at the airport complex and Currie Oval precincts, as Main Street Currie and the Skate Park area are already deemed sufficiently covered.
The council will assess the effectiveness of these new CCTV systems after 18 months of use.
Mr Blackie expressed satisfaction with the decision.
"As Mayor I am satisfied that these decisions have created the right balance sought by our constituents. Decisions made by council are for the future and not to re-live the recent past, pre-supposing that things will remain the same," he said.
"We seek to significantly develop King Island and increase our population in the immediate years ahead. To that end, we have to equip ourselves with the tools required for that future practical eventuality.
"I thank the council team and community for shaping this balanced outcome for our community safety,” Mr Blackie said.
