Landcare grants to support works
A TOTAL of $160,621 will be allocated across 11 land care projects in the state as part of the second stage of the Tasmanian Governments Landcare Action Grants.
Primary Industries Minister Jane Howlett, said the second stage of the grants support restoration projects across the State, with a focus on riparian and wetland rehabilitation, farm dam enhancement, fencing to protect residual vegetation, weed control, improving landscape connectivity, and educational activities for the broader Tasmanian community.
A total of $463,500 is being allocated over the duration of the Landcare Action Grants between 2023-2025.
“As well as $463,500 in grant funding, these grants have leveraged over $600,000 worth of in-kind support making them an important catalyst for community action,” Ms Howlett said.
“Some of the projects in this second stage include waterway and vegetation protection at Upper Stowport, neighbourhood gorse control at Petcheys Bay and farm dam enhancements at Sassafras, Preston and South Preston.
“These important projects will lead to the planting of about 1,300 trees, 37 hectares of weeding, 24 new off-stream watering points and 12 kilometres of fencing being installed across the State. The projects are expected to be finalised by mid next year.
Landcare Tasmania CEO Peter Stronach said the various projects in the grant program are an important catalyst for on-ground community action.
“The Landcare community contributes holistic benefits to Tasmania by improving catchment health, landscape connectivity and better conditions for primary production,” Mr Stronach said.
“These grants are far-reaching across the State, supporting various sized projects, and are an important enabler for environmental landscape change and restoration.”
The Landcare Action Grants program was initially established to provide grant opportunities involving co-investment with farmers, Landcare, and other community organisations on practical on ground works for sustainable agriculture and river care activities.
