Last piece of Bridgewater Bridge hoisted into place

The final segment of the new Bridgewater Bridge was hoisted into position on Thursday, February 27.
Matthew Bissett’s photo shows the last piece in position just before the final lift from “Perseverance’, one of the 12 massive barges that have acted as the scaffolding for the bridge’s construction.
Weighing upwards of 50 tonnes, the super-high-strength concrete piece was number 1082 of 1082 segments cast in a specially built factory in Bridgewater, some three kilometres from the bridge construction.
Each of the segments is engineered to mate with those either side of it; a form of concrete grout will fill the remaining gaps in the 1.2 kilometre bridge deck during the next weeks.
The bridge construction is scheduled for mid-year completion.
