Chill delays local strawberry season

AFTER a slightly late start, Tasmanian-grown strawberries are finally hitting the shelves. 

While the start of the season is a little later than last year due to a chilly spell of weather in October, Fruit Growers Tasmania chief executive officer Peter Cornish said volume and quality were still high. 

Australian production of strawberries is approximately 66,000 tonnes, with Tasmania contributing around 15 per cent of the total volume, or about 10,000 tonnes of strawberries. 

Almost all of the production from Tasmania is sold into the domestic market, with only a small amount exported. 

Local grower Dave Jennings said nothing could beat Tasmanian strawberries. 

“Our cooler climate and extra winter chill enhance the flavour for a sweeter fruit. Less travel time means the fruit is in stores the next day, full of freshness and in great condition,” he said. 

Mr Cornish said strawberries grew well in Tasmania’s cool climate, particularly when grown under poly tunnels and in substrate, which was the case for 90 per cent of production. “Dave Jenning is one of the few growers who is a master at growing in the ground,” he said. 

Mr Jenning believes Tas mania’s access to clean water and mild growing conditions contribute to a long growing season that extends through to May. 

Each season Tasmania’s fruit industry employs around 10,000 people and produces over $325 million worth of fruit. 

“I would encourage Tas manians to get out and enjoy some delicious Tasmanian- grown strawberries, you just can’t beat them for taste and freshness,” Mr Cornish said. 

“And don’t forget you also have our raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and cherries to look forward to in the coming weeks and months.” 

Mr Cornish said he was a big fan of the summer season and all the wonderful fresh fruit Tasmania produces. We are spoilt for choice,” he said. 

“Although it’s still early, this fruit season is shaping up to be a ripper.”
