Confidence for King Island racing
KING Island racing season will be supported by local trainers, Bill Hayes from NSW with support from Tubba Williams, according to recent developments.
A group of prominent Victorian trainers – including Henry Dwyer, Ciaron Maher, Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Andrew Noblet, Andrew Bobbin and Archie Alexander –will not be supporting the island racing this season after sending horses to King Island to race in the past two racing seasons.
“With support from Tasracing, the trainers sent horses to King Island and raced them throughout the season, culminating in the Miners Rest Cup, which saw local sporting organisations and charities awarded significant donations,” Tasracing CEO Andrew Jenkins said.
“After two years, Miners Rest has advised it is not in a position to recommit for a third year.
“The King Island Racing Club (KIRC) and Tasracing are grateful for the contribution that Henry and the Miners Rest crew have provided to King Island over the past two years.
“Tasracing is considering what other support can be provided for this race day and the KIRC.
“A community club challenge, where local sports or community clubs go into a draw for the chance to win a donation for their respective clubs, is one option being considered.” Mr Jenkins said he understood that there was again interstate interest to send horses to King Island this season.
“Pleasingly, the club has indicated to Tasracing that it is confident that the season will continue,” he said. “Tasracing will again provide a travel subsidy for new horses to travel to King Island.
“We remain committed to racing on King Island and have allocated more than $320,000 to the club and participants.”
A spokesperson for Tasracing confirmed that the amount referenced is a yearly contribution to King Island racing. It includes prizemoney, riding and driving fees, horse transport subsidies, charter flights and other racing costs. King Island Racing Club president Audrey Hamer said that the New Years Day Cup Day is not set as yet.
“We are waiting to see jockey availability for January 1,” she said.
“The alternate date for the King Island Cup is Saturday, January 4. The Racing Club is still seeking sponsors. The first Race Day of the season is Ladies Day on November 30.
