Fisheries Tasmania sets rock lobster and squid spawning closure dates

Fisheries Tasmania have released their 2024-25 Rock lobster and Squid spawning closure dates for the next three years.

All waters except East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone open from Saturday  2 November 2024. 

The East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone opens from Saturday 7 December 2024.

The squid and calamari closure dates apply to both commercial and recreational fishers for the next 3 years as they come together for spawning.

All waters North of Cape Grim and Cape Naturaliste including King and Flinders Islands, are closed from 1 September to 31 October in 2024, 2025 and 2026. 

Those fishing cannot take or possess squid or calamari except for commercially purchased bait. 

That means recreationally caught squid or squid parts, eg for use as bait,  taken prior to the closure or outside the closed area may not be possessed in the closed area. 

Additionally, fisherman cannot possess a squid jig attached to a fishing line.
