National Penny Farthing Championships action

The future of the Evandale Village Fair and National Penny Farthing Championships is at a tipping point with organisers hoping to find more volunteers at a public meeting on Wednesday night.

There is currently not enough interested people to maintain the committee let alone run the event, despite 41 years of enormous success that sees competitors and visitors from interstate and overseas roll into town to be part of the action.

With an abundance of quick, quirky and colourful competition the event is a huge drawcard for northern Tasmania and something unique to the tourism calendar.

Committee vacancies include vice-president, secretary and treasurer, as well as managers for sponsorship, medals, marketing and advertising.

President Carol Potter has told the media that there’s a real risk that the biggest event to be held at Evandale, could fold.Crowds watching the women's competition.

Following extensive filming at the last Penny Farthing Championships, the event is set to feature on the popular ABC Television show Backroads.

“The committee is keen to explore new ideas for the event and to hear the views of the Evandale Community,” she said.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 7 at 7pm at the Evandale Memorial Hall. Enquiries to admin@evandalevillagefiar.com
