Record number of police recruits
Tasmania Police is aiming to almost double the number of recruits going through the academy this year compared to last year.
It's on track to produce 170 new constables ready for duty by the end of the year with another 42 graduating today.
The recruits included 20 officers from the Northern Recruit Training Course in Launceston, as well as 22 officers from the Tasmania Police Academy in Rokeby.
Acting Commander Nikala Parsons said the 26 men and 16 women come from a range of backgrounds and life experiences and are a welcome addition to Tasmania Police.
“The new constables range in age from 18 to 45, with some coming straight from school, and others bringing unique skillsets and experience, including farm workers, some retail and administration workers, apprentice tradesman, ex ADF personnel and teachers aids," she said.
“Prior to commencing recruit training, five of the graduating constables have been working as radio dispatch operators, where they gained firsthand experience to the various range of incidents attended by police,” A/Commander Parsons said.
“It goes to show that policing really is a valid career option for anyone with the right attitude and values.”
“Today’s course is one of many to graduate from the Academy this year, and with the 69 recruits currently in training and two more courses set to commence throughout the year, it is the largest cohort of police we’ve ever had training at the one time.”
“I am extremely proud of the 42 constables graduating today who have chosen a career with Tasmania Police, and it is a privilege to support them as they embark on their policing journey.”
