Flood warning

UPDATE: Police have warned of potential flooding of Bridgewater Bridge.

EARLIER: Tasmania State Emergency Service is urging people in the area below Meadbowbank to New Norfolk to prepare for potential flooding tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon.

Executive Director of Tasmania SES, Mick Lowe, said “The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Major Flood warning for Bushy Park and surrounds, with major flooding likely on the Derwent River below Meadowbank tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon.”

“The Lyell Highway, Glenora Road, Boyer Road and other minor roads may be inundated in several places.”

“There is potential for properties to be inundated, and roads may not be accessible.”

“If you live in the Meadowbank or New Norfolk community, it’s imperative that you prepare now for the potential of flooding tomorrow afternoon.”

“If you have a flood emergency plan, please check it now.”

“It’s imperative that people monitor conditions via TasAlert, and make informed decisions and stay safe.”

“Please prepare now to go to a safer place if conditions become more dangerous.”

“If flooding in your area occurs, remember, never drive or enter floodwaters.”

Areas that will potentially be impacted by flooding include:

Bushy Park/Macquarie Plains area: The areas along the Derwent River between New Norfolk and Glenora including low lying prime agricultural land that is prone to flooding from the Derwent River. Areas of greatest risk include the Bushy Park township particularly around the Showgrounds, and Salmon Ponds.

New Norfolk area: Widespread heavy rainfall in the Derwent catchment may cause flooding in riverside low-lying areas of New Norfolk. The New Norfolk bridge across the river may be impassable. Such floods may also isolate the township and surrounding areas.
