The Grand Savio College Reunion
A series of events this week mark an important reunion of those who were attended the famed Savio College in Glenorchy.
It’s now 50 years since the school and its associated boarding house were absorbed into the larger Catholic education system.
The reunion events are planned for this weekend, October 18 to 20.
Organisers say more than 50 former students have indicated they’ll be attending.
Greg Hudson, known for his work with the Lions Club and Graham Family Funerals, is one of those well known in the Derwent Valley who attended Savio College.
The school emerged after the Second World War. It was set up initially as an orphanage, and expanded by the Salesians, a Catholic educational order, to take in children abandoned during that conflict.
Named Savio College in 1956, it continued to expand to include boys from Year 4 to secondary schooling, as well as a continuing provision for boarders.
In 1973, a number of education-focussed elements in the Glenorchy area, including Savio and the Holy Name School were amalgamated into one co-educational entity, Dominic College which today has more than 1,000 students.
The first event this Friday will run from 4.30-6.30 pm at the College and is open to those male ex-students who attended until 1972.
The second event on Saturday is a lunch at the Riverfront Motel Berriedale and is open to partners and family.
The third event is a barbeque at the College at 12.30 Sunday and is open to partners and family.
