Symmons Plains Raceway facilities to be revved up

The home of Tasmania’s biggest sporting event, Symmons Plains Raceway, will receive $5.4 million under a Dutton Coalition Government for improvements that will benefit spectators, competitors, and the wider community.
In the heart of the Northern Midlands, the racetrack hosts a round of the Supercars Championship each year, drawing thousands to what is a favourite track for race car drivers around the country.
This weekend it is hosting the Hi-Tec Oils Race Tasmania - featuring the largest-ever Trans Am Series field - highlighting the venue’s national significance.
The funding commitment was announced today at Symmons Plains Raceway by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who was joined by Liberal Candidate for Lyons Susie Bower and Tasmanian senator Wendy Askew.
It comes on the back of the Tasmanian Government’s announcement on Tuesday that the Supercars will race on in the State thanks to a $6 million deal with organisers plus a $1.8 million injection into mandatory safety and amenity improvements over the next three years.
“Symmons Plains is not only the home of motorsport in Northern Tasmania – it’s a key driver of regional tourism,” Mr Dutton said.
“This investment will ensure Motorsport Tasmania can continue delivering high calibre events with high-quality infrastructure to match.
“The $5.4 million upgrade will deliver a range of critical infrastructure improvements, including:
• Upgraded toilet facilities
• Enhanced driver training amenities
• Refurbishment of the function centre, including training rooms and a covered spectator area
• New digital flag point lighting system
• Control tower upgrade
• Improved media centre
• Essential service upgrades (power, sewerage, etc.)
“Symmons Plains is also the proud host of the Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country event, welcoming over 2500 participants and 3500 spectators, and a preferred training ground for emergency services across the state,” Ms Bower said.
“These upgrades will benefit not just motorsport, but schools, emergency services, and local families too.”
The Supercars Championship returns to Symmons Plains on May 9-11.
A motorsports fan event will also be held at Hobart’s Princes Wharf No.1 on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 3pm to 6pm, featuring several race cars and drivers.
